The Midoco Travel Index shows the daily sales performance in travel retail for Business Travel, Leisure Online and Leisure Offline in Germany and Austria. The figures are based on a representative sample of >11 billion annual travel volume. This makes the Midoco Travel Index the most valid and up-to-date indicator of travel industry performance.
The Midoco Travel Index shows the daily sales development of travel services in the Online Leisure (OTAs), Offline Leisure (Travel Agencies) and Business Travel sectors.
For historical comparison, the Midoco Trav
el Index presents comprehensive values over a timespan dating back to 2018. This makes it possible to display the exact evolution and percentage changes across the different time periods.
The Midoco Travel Index is calculated based on the average value of travel services sold across Germany during 2018. This average 2018 value is indexed with a fixed value of 1000 and is represented in the chart, as the “base 1000” line.
To smooth out daily and weekly fluctuations, the Midoco Travel Index is shown as a rolling 7-day Simple Moving Average. The displayed percentage development is also calculated based on this 7-day average.
This means that, with a daily value of 1,100, the average value of the last 7 days is 10% higher than the average value of 2018.
The values are calculated daily for the previously ended sales day and are updated between 08:30 a.m. and 09:30 a.m. CET.
2023-YTD vs 2019-Same Period is a key performance indicator (KPI) and shows how the year is doing so far compared to 2019.
It compares the sum of the 2022 values to date to the sum of the 2019 values in the same period. So, if we have a positive value here of 10%, this tells us that the market is 10% above the 2019 values in the selected market segment to date.
Many travel bookings in the 2nd half of 2019 for the next year were cancelled as of March 2020 retroactively leading to lower sales in the last quarter of 2019 compared to the same period in 2018. 2018 is thus the last consistently "intact" year that was not affected by Covid-19. Therefore the comparable values 2018 and 2019 to 2022 differ.
In 2018 and 2019, travel services worth €11-12 billion were invoiced via Midoco. The Midoco Travel Index is a representative cross-section of this and is, therefore, the largest source currently available that reflects the development of the German travel market.
Yes, the historical values can change slightly. The cancellation of travel services also leads to a decrease in the value sum and thus the index in the past. In addition, there is an option effect especially for Leisure for the days just past. In some cases, several options are used, some of which are cancelled again in the following days. As a result, the values of the immediately preceding days still move a little. Thus, there is an expected a drop in the current MTIX Midoco Travel Index by 3 - 8% in the following days.
A Midoco Travel Index based on departure date is in development.
